Portland Mercury: Superfest continues the tradition of throwing the finest live band, all-age, electronic dance party this city has ever seen. True to its name, Superfest hijacks your weekend with two nights of varied acts, including tonight's headliners, the endorphin-oozing happiness that we call Deelay Ceelay (who have recently been dormant while they work on new material), alongside the ridiculous party jams of Purple and Green. Saturday will feature one of the final Guidance Counselor shows (as frontman Ian Anderson segues into his new band/moniker, Feelings) and a set of slinking dance-floor burners from the boys in Strength. Also, there will be a "summer-themed" photo booth, so it won't kill you to tuck in your shirt and look respectable for once. EZRA ACE CARAEFF

WWeek: [NEON COULD BE YOUR LIFE] Superfest, now in its third year, offers an exhaustive testament to a distinct moment in Portland’s musical history. The two-day party showcases dance acts that have cut their teeth on the past five years of Portland’s house-show bacchanalia. The fest’s promotional materials feature enough neon to scar your retinas, and its attendants rock Wayfarers as if they were the standard against which all other eyewear should be measured. Superfest 333 features many of the same heavy hitters as previous years. Copy continues to drop enough A-plus beats to put the Swedes to shame; Atole (fronted by festival curator Manny Reyes) makes elegant, atmospheric techno; the wailing disco rock of Strength continues to be the sexiest thing yet produced by a city known for its strip clubs and phallic public installation art. Dressing up Branx as a cramped Northeast basement for two days isn’t a bad idea, and 10 bucks is a steal for a year’s worth of Pabst sweat and rocking out. SHANE DANAHER

FURTHER INFO

SuperFest 4! is the brainchild of collaborators Evan Neuhausen (Music in the Schools), E*Rock (Audio Dregs, Supernature) & Manny Reyes (Atole, Supernature) who met up many times over the Summer to make SuperFest 4! a reality. The story goes that Evan approached Manny about organizing a show together, and when Evan (who has been to every SuperFest! & SuperFresh!) said the words, "SuperFest! is a Summer tradition for me and my friends!" our biggest and best Fest became a reality. We hope to raise awareness for Music in the Schools, as well as dance all night with our amazing friends.

Music in the Schools, Inc. (MITS) is a non-profit organization run by Portland high school students passionate about music education. Founded in 2007, MITS has raised over $35,000 for PPS music education through a series of benefit concerts hosted at local venues. The money we raise is split evenly between the several PPS high schools, providing much needed support to programs struggling for funding. In this time of budget cuts and economic uncertainty, raising money for the arts becomes especially important. As students, we are passionate in our belief that music plays an important role in our high school curriculum and want to make sure it survives as a value in public education. We also feel that the traditional music program isn’t for everyone, which is why we’ve begun to host high school band showcases and battles of the bands. These events give students the opportunity to perform for a paying audience alongside established adult acts, an experience invaluable to aspiring musicians.

Supernature is Portland’s longest running DIY/Dance/Electronic night dedicated to Portland’s live electronic scene. We’ve hosted over 100 local bands, as well as awesome national acts such as Ratatat, LCD Soundsystem, Starfucker & YACHT! SuperFest! is the crown jewel of our series, we hope to keep collaborating with Music in the Schools for years to come. We have always been about community and the kids, now more than ever.
